Interpreting remainders III
3. When the solution is the quotient plus one:: when you need to order or pack all the groups and also the elements left over, always it´s going to be needed a group more. For example: If each car can hold 5 people, how many cars are needed to take 22 people?
EXERCISE: Sandra took 67 pictures on her vacation trip, and she wants to put then in an album. Each page can hold 7 pictures. How many pages does she need to put all the pictures?

2. When the solution is the remainder : Here the questions ask for the amount left over, things that can´t be grouped like the rest,or groups that are different from the other. For example: Mariah wants to pack 33 chocolate bars in 6 boxes, if each box should hold the same amount of chocolate bars. How many bars are going to be left over?
EXERCISE: There are 29 girls in PE class, they are going to play voleyball in groups of 6. The students that do not fit, are going to pick up the balls. How many students are going to pick up the balls?

In division problems the solution can be the quotient, the remainder or the quotient plus one. It dependes on the question. Let´s see:

Sue problem
This is the most popular problem in class but is a good example of problems where you need to choose the information. So here we go:
Sue bought a teddy bear, a yo-yo and a puzzle. She paid $ 45.90 including the tax of $10.23. How much change should Sue receive if she gave the clerk $60?
First of all, we need to decide which numbers in the problem are going to help us to find the solution.
It´s important to notice that the tax is already included in the 45.90, so you do not have to add it to the total. It can be said that the value of the tax is just information.
Another important thing about the problem is the use of cents. For example 45. 90 means 45 dollar and 90 cent. So 60 is 60 dollar and 0 cents.
Finally , in order to find he change we need to substract 60.00 and 45.90

Tomorrow March 5th, Alice in wonderland, the latest Tim Burton movie, is going to be open at Colombian theaters. This is the second part of the movie adaptation of the book originally named Alice´s adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll was a very important mathematician in IXX century. He wrote novels and also mathematics books but the most cultural representative book, which has been translated to several languages, is Alice in Wonderland.
By reading this book carefully you are going to find some notions of speed and neighborhood, which are very rich math concepts adapted to a children book.
Watch the movie and try to read the book you are going to enjoy them for sure.
